Backlash

Taylor faced more media scrutiny and the biggest backlash of her career to date in 2010, when a live duet with Fleetwood Mac star Stevie Nicks at the Grammy Awards went wrong. Swift’s voice sounded too loud and was very obviously out of tune, prompting much comment in the media, the harshest of which knocked Taylor’s confidence. Naturally, Taylor dealt with her feelings by writing a hit song about it (‘Mean’).

In 2013, the singer again caused controversy with what seemed like two digs at her ex-boyfriend, Harry Styles, then of the boy band One Direction. At the Grammy Awards in February, she affected an English accent while performing ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’. Later that year, during her acceptance speech after winning Best Female Video for ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ at MTV’s VMA Awards, Taylor said, ‘I also wanna thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is, because now I got one of these!’ The TV coverage cut to One Direction’s row where a slightly bemused-looking Styles was flanked by his very amused bandmates.
